2015 Stanly Ranch Carneros

The 2015 growing season in Carneros started out with unseasonably warm temperatures in late winter and early spring resulting in an early bud break and bloom. Colder temps in May (during the peak of bloom) caused uneven fruit set which ultimately dictated smaller yields. Not a bad thing. There was ample rainfall to nourish the vines and the Lake County fires luckily did not effect our crops. The harvest was one of the earliest on record with high quality fruit all around.

The routine for this pick hasn't changed much in the last 16 years. We arrive in the middle of the night and help the workers pick every little cluster and place them in our bins. From there, we transport the grapes to the winery where we sort, de-syem and dump all the clusters in an open-topped bin. The grapes are then left to chill at 50 degrees for about 5 days to soak up color and tannins. Once the bin is warmed up the fermentation begins naturally and maunal punch downs occur 2-3 times a day. After dryness, the wine is pressed into 30% new oak barrels and left to age about 11 months. It is bottled unfined.

The 16th vintage of wine from Stanly Rancg. Fresh, ripe strawberries, blackberry jam and plums laced with fennel are some high notes in this wine. the palate has a juicy richness and the most silky tannins balanced by a bright acidity and a lingering finish.
